Both are standard middleweights in overall size, with Golovkin's extra inch in height the only thing separating the two. Any difference between their power lies below the surface, but the delivery of it can be studied by the naked eye. David Lemieux is a siege engine, battering the arms and body of his adversary, setting up his excellent left hook and overhand right. Golovkin develops an entirely different relationship with his opponent. He is an apex predator, aware but inconsiderate of his prey's wishes. He stalks them and removes all hope. Their strategy thwarted, stripped of their power and stamina by round four, they are forced to succumb.
In the first round David Lemieux will look to destroy Golovkin's legend before he attempts to destroy the man. Golovkin, looking to provide entertainment first before winning, will give Lemieux a chance to catch him early. In this fight Lemieux's left hook will be his best weapon, because it is not as telegraphed as his right and can slip behind Golovkin's guard. One of these left hooks will put GGG down early in the middle of an exchange. For once we get to see Golovkin's recovery skills. Both his Olympic amateur pedigree and professional experience give him the tools to survive the round. The following round has Lemieux chasing GGG with the bloodlust of a berserker. This blind fury does not aid him, and the majority of the round is Golovkin pumping powerful jabs and shuffling away from the ropes. Lemieux has the first knockdown but GGG draws first blood, Lemieux pawing at his eye on the way back to the corner. With his feet under him, Golovkin looks to trade. Both land vicious blows to the body, but Golovkin is backed against the ropes when he is hit with another big left hook. Invigorated by the crowd's roar, Lemieux can see victory around the corner with every punch he throws. He does not see the right uppercut that has him crumbling to the ground.
Only basic instinct causes him to get up, and he should be glad that the punishment he dished out that round stops Golovkin from finishing him. The look Lemieux sees in GGG's eyes is not anger or joy or ambition. It is pure hunger. Golovkin hits him with a big right hand to start the next round. A follow up combination sends him into the embrace of the ropes. For the next several rounds Lemieux cannot escape. Lefts and rights concuss the Canadian, while he experiences a sensation similar to his organs being rearranged as GGG pummels his body. With his trainer screaming in exasperation, and the doctor on the verge of stopping it, Lemieux decides to give GGG all he has in the next round. Golovkin sidesteps the first rush and nails him with a right hand behind the ear. Lemieux falls facedown, and the doctor runs into the ring before a count is started.
The second event is leviathan versus behemoth. Wladimir Klitschko has refused to give up the heavyweight crown worn by the likes Joe Louis and Muhammed Ali for roughly a decade. Countless heavyweights have stepped up to slay the dragon, but now he faces a larger monster in Tyson Fury. Klitschko will suffer a height and reach disadvantage, an unheard of phenomenon. Fury is the heavier man, but that may not translate to a clear edge in strength and power. He is bottom heavy, while klitschko's weight is more distributed in his shoulders and arms. Both are knockout artist, but Klitschko earns an edge because of his cleaner, shorter punches. Klitschko also has superior hand and foot speed, and conditioning despite his age. Despite all of this, Tyson Fury will win.
The beginning rounds will be disastrous for Fury. Klitschko, hoping to gain respect from the man who respects nobody, repeatedly snaps his head back with a stiff jab, which sets up right crosses and left hooks. Again and again Klitschko unloads on the goliath, Fury's sweat flying across the ring. The only amusement in the fight are Fury's love handles jiggling with each punch. A slight shift in the fight emerges from under the surface after the first third of the fight. Fury starts walking through Klitschko's punches. He shouts insults, mocks him, and proceeds to bully the older man. Klitschko cannot manhandle this heavyweight, and ends up receiving elbows, shoulders, and throws for his efforts. Fury's wild punches no longer miss the mark as the older man's body begins to fail him in his time of need. An ugly right catches Klitschko as he steps straight back, buckling his knees. Klitschko holds onto Fury, but Fury frees his right and continues to batter the head and body of the champion. Fury throws him to the ground, and continues his assault verbally while the referee has Klitschko get back to his feet. Not a man to end his opponent's suffering, Fury takes his time knocking him around. With rubber for legs, Klitschko can no longer flee or generate the power to keep Fury off him. The champion takes a knee, but it is not long before he is on the canvas again. The unbeatable Ukrainian ends his reign desperately trying to climb the ropes while the referee waves it off.
Skill or brutality alone does not make a fighter victorious, but rather a mixture of the two. Gennady Golovkin's overwhelming stockpiles of both will allow him to outclass the relatively one dimensional David Lemieux. Wladimir Klitschko is similar to Golovkin in that regard, but unfortunately a third factor tips the scales out of his favor, youth. While a clash between a prime Klitschko and Fury would end in an entirely different fight, that is not the case with this heavyweight title bout. Klitschko is the elder by more than a decade, a fatal handicap in boxing. More important than these observations is the fact that two amazing fights have been made, boxing's oasis in this drought of credible fights or fights at all. More demands and negotiations are being thrown than punches. Based on this heavyweight fight, the next big event would be title unification between Tyson Fury and Deontay Wilder. As for Golovkin, he needs to consider giving advantages to his opponents in order to seal some deals. Why argue over a couple of pounds with Ward if GGG's camp is so is confidant of victory? Andre Ward is not a viable opponent for anyone since he is just going to get injured once again. Some 154 pounders might consider the middleweight monster if he came in a little drained. Fights between him and Canelo Alvarez or even the Charlo brothers would help the sport.
